Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the True North Student Life-Coaching program, including why we are your best choice, where it happens, how long it takes, how much it costs, and more.

What is the right are for student coaching?

Teens tend to develop more critical thinking after the age of 13. At this stage of development, they often prefer to be independent and “do things on their own”. This is totally normal for a young person experimenting with autonomy.  Based on current neuroscience we now know that the human brain doesn’t fully develop until we are in our mid-twenties. That’s why we offer life-coaching to students between the ages of 13 and 25.

Can parents attend the life-coaching sessions?

No, parents cannot attend the sessions as they are designed to empower the individual and allow him/her/them to develop skills necessary to pursue health and wellness. This process is typically done without the presence of the parent during the sessions.  However, there are optional parent sessions and we believe that parental involvement is necessary for the long-term success of their child. We’ve created out work assignments that include the whole family system that will allow you to be aware of every aspect of the program.

Please note: Our privacy policy does not allow us to disclose any information you share with us to anyone, including your child and vice versa. This will encourage all parties to be completely honest and open in healthy and supportive ways.

What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

We do not diagnose individuals or focus on the past. We are forward and goal-oriented. In coaching, we focus on the future. There is a time for counseling and we would be happy to offer referrals as needed but there is a distinction between healing from hurts and habits versus developing a strategic plan to move towards accomplishing goals and objectives.

Do we need to commit to a certain number of coaching sessions?

No. In most arrangements, you will be asked to commit to a predetermined number of sessions so there are a definite start and finish. This helps us plan accordingly but each student is unique and will need individualized programming. Most agree to 3, 6, or 12 sessions. We believe commitment is essential to success regardless of how long that commitment is. Each session lasts approximately 1.5 hours – 2 hours and the frequency of meetings depends on the needs of the student and their families. An individual may want to work through 3 sessions in one month or 12 sessions at one session per month over the course of a year. Regardless of the need, it’s completely customizable.
